Summer is here and it’s time to enjoy the sunshine and outdoors in Massachusetts. You may be visiting from Pennsylvania or New Jersey (where you can enjoy great online slots at Borgata Online) or another state and on the lookout for some inspirational family-friendly activities. You might even just want to learn more about what summer in your home state of Massachusetts looks like. Here’s a great list of things to do in MA so you can make the most of the last days of summer.

1. Soak Up the Sun at Cape Cod

What better way to kick off a summer holiday than some quality time at the beach? Cape Cod offers some of the best beaches for you and your family to enjoy yourselves. Old Silver Beach offers reasonably warm waters and great sunset views; Mayflower Beach has gentle waves and kid-friendly tidal pools, while Kalmus Beach is loved by many windsurfers for its favorable weather and consistent water temperatures. There are many more beaches, each with its own unique characteristics, so be sure to find out what they all have to offer.

2. Enjoy Whale Watching Gloucester, Cape Ann

There’s no doubt that if you want to witness some of nature’s most impressive ocean mammals first-hand and in their natural environment, you’ll want to visit Gloucester. Gloucester is one of two towns (the other being Provincetown) situated near the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary — a region that’s home to two whale feeding areas. These two feeding areas are ideal environments for plankton to reproduce, which is why so many different sea creatures, including a variety of whales, visit the area to feed. Due to the abundance of food, this region is one of the best places to catch sight of these incredible underwater behemoths.

3. Take a Walk on the Freedom Trail in Boston

If you’re looking for Boston summer activities and want to educate your kids or yourself about some of America’s most important places during the American Revolution, the Boston Freedom Trail is home to many important historical sites. This 2.5-mile walk will guide you along 16 places that all have an important place in America’s history, including the Boston Common, the Massachusetts State House, Park Street Church, the U.S.S. Constitution, as well as various schools, meeting houses and more. Join more than four million other visitors from around the world who follow in the footsteps of the Founding Fathers every year.

4. Forget About the Outside World on Nantucket Island

And what better way to get away from it all than to escape to an actual island? Nantucket Island is located approximately 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod and is known for its relaxing atmosphere.

When you visit the island, also known as “The Little Grey Lady of the Sea,” you and your friends or family will have so much to enjoy. Take a ride on the Paragon Carousel, a carousel that was built in 1928 on Nantasket Beach with many wonderful creatures to ride on, including wooden horses and Roman chariots. Or take a visit to one of the three lighthouses around the island. The Sankaty Head Lighthouse, Great Point Light and Brant Point Lighthouse provide a great experience for both kids and adults. Why not hop on a bike and cycle around the town, taking in the various sights at a slower, more leisurely pace?

Of course, you could also visit Jetties Beach, Siasconset Beach or one of the other wonderful seaside beaches to enjoy all that the blue waters and golden sands have to offer.

5. Discover the Wondrous Berkshires

This region has so much to offer those who want to get the most out of the warmer summer months, including hiking, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, horseback riding, camping, biking and so much more.

And suppose you want to enjoy some of the more human-made comforts. In that case, you can also take your family to a concert at Tanglewood, spoil them with tasty treats at the Marketplace Speciality Store, dabble in some delicious dairy goods, including artisanal cheese and ice cream at the High Lawn Farm, catch a movie at the independent movie house Images Cinema and discover all the other unforgettable experiences this lovely location has available.
