Serious poker players who compete in offline and online poker for real money are always looking for ways to improve their game. One of the ideas that this category of poker players will likely have stumbled across is Nash equilibrium.

In this blog, you can learn about Nash equilibrium and what it is, how it applies to poker games, and how it relates to GTO poker.

What Is the Nash Equilibrium?

In the article “Nash Equilibrium: How It Works in Game Theory, Examples, Plus Prisoner’s Dilemma,” Investopedia describes Nash equilibrium as “a scenario in game theory in which no player in a non-cooperative game has anything to gain by changing their only strategy.” They explain how American mathematician John Nash invented this concept and how it’s considered one of the most important ideas in game theory. This is because it tries to use math and logic to support the decisions players make when trying to maximize their results.

Another key part of this concept is that players don’t change their strategies even if they have knowledge of the other players’ approach to the game. Even if all the players know what approach their opponents are using, they still stick with their initial strategy because there are no better decisions to be made.

The article also describes how Nash equilibrium is connected to the idea of dominant strategy. When a single person is using the best approach without knowledge of what the other players are doing, this is the dominant strategy. When multiple players are using the dominant strategy in a game and know what strategy the other players will use, Nash equilibrium has been achieved.

This game theory concept is applicable to multiple areas in life and study, including economics and military affairs. It’s also applicable to poker.

The article “Nashing In: Why Poker Players Are Thinking Like Economists” by Frontier Economics describes how John Nash himself believed that his theory would also apply to poker strategies. Unfortunately, due to the game’, there hasn’t been any true Nash equilibrium achieved in the game, but that doesn’t mean that this aspect of game theory isn’t valuable for serious poker players.

How To Apply Nash Equilibrium to Poker

While Nash equilibrium may not be applicable to a game of poker from start to finish, the concept still applies to particular hands and scenarios. This is most easily demonstrated by poker players using tools called poker solvers. These are apps where players can input different variables, such as what betting round it is, what community cards are in play, and stack sizes, to determine the best action to take in that particular situation.

As a poker player, you’ll need to learn how to play without a solver using GTO poker theory — which we break down in the next section. As you get better at the game and come up against better players, the closer you’ll get to seeing Nash equilibrium apply to your poker games.

Nash Equilibrium and GTO Poker

While Nash equilibrium may be a new concept to many poker players, GTO poker is much more familiar to both experienced poker players and those who are learning how to play poker.

In poker theory, GTO poker is when a player makes the best choice in any particular game. It’s an approach that eliminates a player’s weaknesses during play since their choice is based on advanced mathematical models. It’s considered the best way to improve your poker game by modern poker players.

However, this doesn’t mean that you won’t lose when using this strategy. After all, poker does have an element of chance and other players will still have the opportunity to make stronger hands than you. However, it does mean that you’ll always make the most optimal choice in any particular scenario.

But what does Nash equilibrium have to do with GTO poker?

As previously mentioned, when two players are both playing GTO poker and neither player changes their strategy because there are no better decisions, they are considered to have reached Nash equilibrium. While this scenario may not be truly achievable, it’s still applicable to the game as we get closer to solving the game of poker.
