The first activity on our list of things to do in Lansing is to head on over to the world’s largest lug nut. If you’re wondering why someone decided to build the world’s largest lug nut in this city, it’s because of baseball. Yes, that’s right. In 1996, a minor league baseball team by the name of the Sultans of Springfield moved to Lansing and needed to update their name to suit their new home. It was decided that their new name would be the Lansing Lugnuts and although the name didn’t immediately hit a home run, the name eventually grew among local baseball fans.

To celebrate the identity of the new team, the world’s largest lug nut was placed on top of a smokestack on a factory across from the Cooley Law School Stadium, the Lansing Lugnuts’  home field.

2. Check Out the Moist Towelette Museum

If you’re interested in weird things (like these weird gambling laws in the USA) in Michigan, Lansing definitely has one of the most unique museums in the country or possibly the entire world: the Moist Towelette Museum. 

The CBC article “Meet the man who runs a moist towelette museum out of a planetarium” describes how John French, an employee at Michigan State University’s planetarium, was surprised at all of the strange things people collected when he was browsing the internet way back in the 1990s. He couldn’t find any collections of towelettes, so he started one himself. More than two decades later, he now has over 1,000 towelettes on display in a part of his office.

3. Test Your Arm and Aim Out at Bull’s Eye Axe Throwing

Of all the fun places to go in Michigan, Bull’s Eye Axe Throwing (also known as B.E.A.T) in Lansing is definitely one of the places to visit. This was the first place that people could go to in Lansing to hone their axe-throwing skills, and while anyone can come here to have a good time, this venue takes axe-throwing seriously. You can find lanes that match the standards set by the World Axe Throwing League (WATL,) allowing you to practice your skills and take your game to the next level.

If you’re a more casual axe thrower, you’re still more than welcome here and will be coached by professional Axe Masters as long as you’re at least eight years old. It may have once been an obscure activity (just like these obscure casino table games,) but there’s no doubt that axe-throwing is becoming a more popular pastime.

4. Play Shuffleboard and Enjoy Other Activities at Lansing Shuffle

Lansing Shuffle is a food hall and social club on the Lansing riverfront that aims to create a welcoming space where people can get good food and enjoy a variety of activities including art, music, stand-up comedy and, of course, shuffleboard. For those of you who are extremely excited to discover that you don’t have to book a cruise to enjoy your favorite game, you’re going to have to wait a bit longer before you can slide your puck to victory. The Shuffleboard Pavilion is still under construction but is expected to be finished during the summer of 2023.

5. Visit Lansing’s Rotary Steam Clock

In 1997, on the city’s 150th birthday, the Rotary Steam Clock was installed in Wentworth Park near the Michigan Avenue and Grand Avenue intersection. In the piece “A Timeless Gift – Clock tower honors city’s 150th birthday” by the Lansing Rotary Club, they describe how Verdin Company of Cincinnati was hired to build this unique clock. Acclaimed industrial designer David Day put together the architectural plans for this art deco timepiece which was constructed in Wentworth Park. 

This amazing piece of architecture cost $150,000 and was paid for entirely with donations from the Rotary Club.

6. Put the Pedal to the Metal at High Caliber Karting and Entertainment

Self-described as Michigan’s #1 indoor action and entertainment park, there’s no doubt that High Caliber Karting and Entertainment offers an incredible variety of adrenaline-pumping and fun activities. 

If you have a need for speed, strap yourself into one of their mini go-karts, or try your hand at axe throwing or throw bowling (a cross between football and 10-pin bowling,) take aim at your friends and family with archery tag or gellyball battles (a less-painful version of paintball). If you’re more skilled with your feet, they also offer pocket soccer (a unique combination of pool and soccer that could be on our list of five crazy ball games you probably never heard of). Had a bad week? Let out some pent-up frustration in a rage room, and if digital gaming is more of your thing, there’s also the High Caliber Arcade with many thrilling arcade games.

7. Discover a Piece of Firefighting History With the Queen City

A small piece of firefighting history is contained in a glass building outside the headquarters of Michigan Millers Insurance Company. According to Atlas Obscura’s piece on The Queen City, the pumper fire engine was bought in 1895 by the Traverse City Fire Department. It was used approximately 4,000 times over a 22 year period before it was retired. It has been preserved and put on display on East Grand River Avenue where anyone can stop to take a look at this once-cutting edge fire fighting machine.
