Baywatch
If you spent a lot of time during the 1990s watching a show packed with red swimsuits, as well as men and women with beautiful beach bodies, you’d have been just one of the many millions of people who did the same. Baywatch was an action drama TV series that followed the lives of several lifeguards at home and at work; but it may surprise many people to know that the show had gotten off to a rocky start. It was originally aired on NBC and was canceled after just one season.
Thankfully, David Hasselhoff and other members of the production believed in the series and managed to bring the show back as a syndicated title. Since it was no longer tied to a specific TV network, Baywatch was now free to be screened on TVs all around the world, and that’s exactly what happened. The show exploded internationally and turned actors including Pamela Anderson, Yasmin Bleeth, and Hasselhoff into household names. It even helped Hasselhoff claim a Guinness World Record as “most watched man on television” in 1996, when the show was attracting approximately 1.1 billion viewers for each new episode.
The franchise would go on to include two spin-off series, Baywatch: Hawaii and Baywatch: Nights, three direct-to-TV movies, a fully fledged feature film, as well as a documentary.

Bill and Ted
The Bill and Ted franchise started off as a movie about two best buds named, yes, Bill and Ted: two lovable, but not-so-bright teenagers and aspiring rock stars. While their music may have been pretty “radical,” their grades in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure were not. To help them make it through high school and pass their history paper – so that they could form their band, the Wyld Stallyns, and save the future – time travellers return to the past and take Bill and Ted on a journey through time to meet important historical figures.
As ridiculous as this premise may sound, it went on to spawn a sequel called Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. Another follow-up, called Bill & Ted Face the Music, was released in 2020, more than three decades after the release of the original movie. This franchise may not have reached the epic heights of Baywatch, but it did help cement the career of one of our favorite actors, Keanu Reeves, who would go on to star in the incredible Matrix series of films, as well as other action hits including Point Break, Speed and John Wick. We can’t speak for everyone, but we think this was “most outstanding.”

Ghostbusters
If you know to “never cross the streams,” you’re undoubtedly a fan of Ghostbusters. This spooky comedy franchise first hit the big screen in 1984, and helped launch (or further progress) the careers of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, and Sigourney Weaver into the stratosphere.
The first movie sets the scene by introducing us to a team of paranormal investigators who everyone believes are jokes… until strange things start happening that cannot be explained. After the team sets up their business as the “Ghostbusters,” they soon discover that an ancient evil force plans to take over New York, and that they’re the only ones who can stop it.
The film was a smash hit and was followed up by a sequel not long after. Attempts to get a third movie starring the original cast failed to get off the ground, but a reboot of the original franchise was made in 2016. Since then, it has been announced that a true sequel to the original films will be released in 2021 called Ghostbusters: Afterlife. This franchise also spawned two cartoons and comic books, and several video games.

Jumanji
The Jumanji franchise once seemed destined to be forgotten, but thanks to an incredibly successful reboot with two new feature movie, this exciting franchise has been brought back to life!
The original Jumanji film was released all the way back in 1995. It was based on the book of the same name from 1981, and starred Robin WIlliams, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, and Bradley Pierce. The movie was a fantasy adventure which told the tale of four people who had to complete a magical fantasy board game. But this was not just any ordinary game – it was one filled with dangerous wildlife, deadly traps, and violent acts of nature, all of which came to life!
The success of this film spawned an animated series which ran for three years, and also helped a sequel arrive a decade later after the author of the original book, Chris Van Allsburg, completed the next instalment, Zathura, in 2002. Zathura followed a similar concept to the original, with children trapped in a board game, but this time it had a sci-fi theme. However, much to the disappointment of fans of both the first book and its associated film, it didn’t feature any of the original characters! Despite receiving positive reviews, the movie flopped and, for all intents and purposes, Jumanji was left by the wayside.
Thankfully it would not be forgotten forever, with the revival of Jumanji taking place in 2017, albeit with a more modern twist. In the new films, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, the characters must escape the dangerous digital world of Jumanji, as they now find themselves trapped in a video game! These new titles stick to the fantasy adventure genre but add a much larger element of comedy to the mix, which has resulted in both movies being box-office hits. A third instalment in this new series is reported to be in the works, albeit without a release date as yet.
